Weekly #2: Fitting our Lives into Backpacks and Enjoying Malta

New here? You can start here, and check out all of our weekly posts here.

Planning, saving money, letting go of all our stuff… all easy peasy compared to preparing our packs for a year of travel! We have already donated most of our belongings, but every month since we first left the apartment we let go of a chunk more and this never seems to end… will we even have enough underwear by the time we travel?

Jokes aside, we’re definitely over-packing. Do we need so many shorts? No. Do we want to have several options? Oh yes, we do. So let’s live with the consequences (ouch! our backs will hate us).

We have created a whole in-depth guide on the subject right here: How to pack for ONE YEAR of travel: Our Packing List. So if you really want to know what’s inside our bags, this is where you’ll find it!

We’ll just give a quick update on our bags and the most important things we’re carrying here:

And all the stuff we have donated in the past weeks and expect to donate before the trip:

Well, besides that, we are finishing the last critical details of our trip planning: buying our medical insurance (we opted for Safety Wings), getting updated Covid Certificates and booking the accommodations for the first week in Sri Lanka.

Yes… we’re only booking accommodations a week before and will continue to do so for the whole trip. We don’t know what could go wrong or if we would want to stay a bit longer somewhere so we decided to go with the flow on this matter. We’re mainly using Agoda to look for hotels and the prices are ridiculously cheap (yey!!!).

Our budget for this trip is roughly 40-50 euros per day for both of us and since accommodations usually take the biggest percentage of anyone’s trip’s budget, having a 5-euro hotel room is all we could ask for.

We’re boarding the plane in 12 days only so last weekend we did all sorts of things: kayaking until exhaustion into the most beautiful sea cave, taking a boat to Comino and jumping into a secret bay (also getting stuck there and being pulled off with the help of a towel), and having a Brazilian barbecue with PICANHA!

kayaking

Kayaking to Coral Lagoon here in Malta has been on our bucket list for ages now! We were super lucky to have Bianca and Thales, another Brazilian couple living in Malta (and the faces behind @vivamaltaoficial amazing content), accompanying us on this adventure. It was a bit windy on the day so the waves were big outside of the cave… thank heavens for the peace of mind of wearing life jackets lol

barbecue

Picanha is heaven on earth! And it deserves a special place in this post for two reasons: first being that we haven’t had such a perfect Brazilian barbecue since leaving Brazil almost 3 years ago, and second, being that it was prepared by such good and awesome new friends!

Rafa and Luiza (the couple behind the @tripnlove page – yes, from our Top 10 Instagram Accounts to Inspire your Next Trip to Malta), thank you!

comino island

Oh, the pain of saying goodbye to this paradise!

We made it to the island pretty early in the morning and this time we walked around the whole island. We found a hidden bay right next to San Niklaw Bay and of course, Nick jumped in…

…only to discover the rocks are really sharp and she couldn’t climb out! So rescue started and Bruno used a towel to pull her from the water (how we wished we’d recorded this ridiculous moment). Scratches aside, we both survived.

Too bad for us we didn’t survive the sun… To be honest, this was 100% our fault, we completely forgot to take sunscreen, so Nicolle has been living inside a pot of aloe vera for the past few days.

PS: We’re currently in a competition to see who makes the nicest video from the footage we took in Comino, stay tuned! @wheretoflow
