Tanjung Rhu Resort Langkawi – Hotel Review

Table of Contents

Shortly after our stay at Rebak Island Resort, we were transferred to one of the recently acquired Tradewinds Hotels & Resorts in Langkawi: the Tanjung Rhu Resort. We had not yet been to this side of the island, and the fact that you are greeted by the most beautiful beach we’ve seen in Langkawi is just a hint of the amazing experience you’ll have in the resort.

Here you will find everything about this amazing resort and our honest review!

Tanjung Rhu Resort

Location

Located on the Northern tip of the island of Langkawi, off the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia, Tanjung Rhu Resort is just a 30-minute drive away from Langkawi International Airport. The resort sits on a 2.5 km white-sand beach, shaded by rustling Casuarina trees, and overviewing the beautiful islets that shape the bay kissed by the Andaman Sea. Next to the resort, you will find the Langkawi Mangrove and the Air Hangat (Hot Springs) Village.

The Rooms

Tanjung Rhu Resort offers 136 nicely decorated guestrooms. The Bayu Senja and Bayu Suria Suites are nicely positioned overlooking the sea, while the Damai and the Cahaya Suites overlook the gardens. We stayed in a Bayu Senja Suite so this is the one we will focus on in this review.

Tanjung Rhu Resort Review

The Bayu Senja Suites are 80 sqm and feature two balconies, overlooking both the sea and the tropical gardens. It’s fitted with large windows, a king bed, and an en suite open-plan bathroom. It has two separate sitting areas, two TVs, and a closet. It’s super spacious and we think it’s the perfect room if you’re planning a longer stay.

The open-plan bathroom is nothing short of stunning! The bathtub opens to the room, with sea views, while a separate shower and two vanity units complete the space. It was definitely our favorite part of the room.

All the rooms are air-conditioned, and you can control the temperature in the two separate spaces as you wish. Amenities include a powered safe, an electric kettle, an ironing set, a hair dryer, and bathrobes. A writing desk is also available and we love it (perfect to organize all of our photography equipment!).

The Space

Tanjung Rhu Resort counts with two large outdoor pools (family and adult), a fitness center with sauna rooms and steam baths, tennis courts, multiple dining options, and a spa. The resort also offers a variety of activities, including cruises, fishing trips, eagle-feeding sessions, mangrove tours, and watersports.

The western portion of the resort is where the adult pool is located. Next to it, you will find the Sands Restaurant and Pool Bar and the Chef’s Table fine dining restaurant. The adult pool is the most peaceful place in the resort, where you can enjoy a silent day by the pool with the convenience of the bar to provide you with signature drinks throughout the day.

It’s worth noting that because the sun rises from behind the mountains, the pools open only at 10 AM. The sun sets right in front of the resort.

On the eastern portion of the resort, you will find the main building and its tropical garden, as well as the family pool, the Sunset Pool Bar, and the Café Reading Room. It’s also in this area that you have the most beautiful view of the Kelam Baya and Chabang Islets.

After the family pool, you’ll find the Watersports Center, where you can rent Stand Up Paddle Boards, Kayaks, and ATVs to explore the bay.

The Food

Tanjung Rhu Resort offers 24 hours room service as well as multiple dining options:

Sands Restaurant

The Sands Restaurant, where breakfast is served, is also an all-dining option in the resort, open from 7 AM to 11 PM. This restaurant serves both Asian and International cuisines, with a spectacular view of the beach. For lunch and dinner, we recommend trying the local dishes!

The breakfast here is served in a buffet setting, with separate eggs, noodles, and pancake stations.

Sands Pool Bar

Located right next to the 50 meters adult pool, the Sands Pool Bar offers a variety of snacks and drinks and it’s open every day from 12 PM to 8 PM.

Chef’s Table Restaurant

The Chef’s Table Restaurant is a specialty restaurant that serves an Asian-themed four-course menu of modern contemporary and Mediterranean cuisines. We had a romantic dinner here and the food is unbelievable! Easily one of the best set menus we tried in Malaysia.

The restaurant is open for dinner only from 6:30 PM to 11:00 PM. Do note that you need to contact the front desk to reserve your table.

The Sunset Poolbar

Located next to the freshwater family pool, the Sunset Poolbar offers an extensive menu comprising a variety of snacks and drinks. It is open daily from 12 PM to 8 PM, and it’s a good option for a quick lunch by the beach.

Café Reading Room

The Café Reading Room is a cool and quiet space, overlooking the sea, where you can have traditional English Tea or coffee, with hot scones, pastries, and savories. Open daily from 11 AM to 11 PM, an extensive collection of books and magazines is also available for the guest’s convenience.

Safrons Sports Bistro

This new concept bistro boasts a wood-fired pizza oven and offers a more relaxed option for dinner. Open daily from 5 PM to 12 AM, the Safrons Sports Bistro overlooks the beach and offers a menu focused on their – really tasty – pizzas and burgers. We definitely recommend trying chef’s Jack pizzas when here!

Private Dining Experiences

Tanjung Rhu Resort also organizes private dining experiences such as picnic lunches on an uninhabited island, a romantic barbecue under the stars, or al-fresco fine dining experience on the beach.

Note: we base our ratings on same-level accommodations in similar locations, therefore we’ll never compare a Hostel in Asia with a Hostel in Europe or a guesthouse with a 5-star resort.

Conclusion

The hotel has been recently acquired by Tradewinds Hotels & Resorts and we were informed that they’re expecting to do some renovations at the beginning of 2023. As of now, Tanjung Rhu Resort is already one of the nicest resorts we visited in Malaysia and we think not much is needed to perfect it.

The service is 5 starts, the room is amazing and the food is mouth-watering. Prices are also really good, ranging from around 180 euros per night for a suite to 315 a night for a family room. The restaurants range from 10-20 euros per dish, with a complete dinner for two costing around 30-60 euros.

Tanjung Rhu Resort is a gem and if we could choose one hotel in Langkawi to recommend to you, this would be it!
