When planning our winter road trip in Sardinia we decided to spend two nights in the mountain region in the small commune of Baunei. With a population of about 3.600 inhabitants, Baunei is a village clinging to a sheer slope at almost 500 meters over the sea.
Once we started looking for accommodation, we quickly realized there aren’t many options, especially hotels, available in the area. You’ll mostly find Guesthouses and B&Bs, and the good news is that, during winter, the prices are surprisingly affordable – starting at around 45 euros per night (as of February 2022).
Note: It is much easier to find accommodation in the nearest town, Santa Maria Navarrese. So if you prefer to stay at sea-front resorts or the closest to the sea, this might be a better choice for you.
We wanted the mountain feels so we found the cutest little guesthouse for our 2-night stay: “Sa Scala” Bed&Terrace. In this review, we’ll tell you about all the details of our stay!
“Sa Scala” Bed&Terrace
Location
The guesthouse is located only 650 m from the center of Baunei and offers impressive views of the valley.

The village is not easy to reach via public transport, and so are not the mountain treks and beaches surrounding the area. Renting a car to explore Baunei is definitely advisable.
Next to Baunei, you’ll find some of the most famous Sardinian beaches, like Cala Goloritzè, Cala Mariolu, and Cala Luna. Since laying on paradisiac beaches and enjoying scenic boat rides are out of the question during wintertime, you’ll be happy to know that Baunei is also home to some of the best hiking and climbing experiences in Europe.

The Suites
Options at “Sa Scala” Bed&Terrace include Double or Twin Suites, with only one suite per floor. All rooms seem to have been renovated recently with a rustic decor that gives amazing mountain feels, but what makes them really outstanding is the view over the valley.

All four suites are equipped with a flat-screen TV, air-conditioner, hairdryer, and minibar. The bathroom is also very modern and clean.

Note that the first-floor room, which is a bit cheaper than the rest, doesn’t include a balcony and therefore the views are not as lovely. It is also located next to the front door and to the road, so you might or might not find it a bit noisier.
There is no reception but we found the host lovely! Before arrival, he oriented us on how to access the premises, and upon arrival, he let us know that there was a small “welcome package” in our minibar. He is super attentive and easy to communicate with, although communication was mostly in Italian.

The Terrace
Upstairs you will find a lovely terrace and the main reason we decided to book a stay at “Sa Scala” Bed&Terrace. The views are breathtaking, and although we decided upon watching the sunset at the nearby Belvedere Supramonte, we’re sure that the views at this time of day are evenly impressive from here.

Breakfast
When booking our room at “Sa Scala” Bed&Terrace there was no breakfast option, however, we discovered upon arrival that coffee, tea, and sweets are provided next to the rooftop terrace for free. It’s not an elaborate breakfast but definitely a breakfast with a view!

We paid 48 EUR per night for our suite in February 2022. We discovered later that since we were the only guests at the time, the host had upgraded us from the first-floor room to the second floor, which included a balcony.
The downsides of this stay are the shower, which takes a long time to get hot, and the lack of wifi. We did not rate the breakfast here since it wasn’t included. It was simple, but it was free so big points for that!
Note: we base our ratings on same-level accommodations in similar locations, therefore we’ll never compare a Hostel in Asia with a Hostel in Europe or a guesthouse with a 5-star resort.
Conclusion
If you’re looking for a place to stay alone or as a couple while exploring the impressive region of Baunei, then “Sa Scala” Bed&Terrace is your perfect choice! The place is tidy and clean, the views are amazing & you will surely never get bored with the endless activities around the area.
