Travel Tips

Here are some essential information to help you navigate and fully enjoy the Land of Smiles!

Traveling in Thailand can be super affordable! For those on a budget, you can expect to pay around 20-40 euros per person per day. Paid outdoor activities can increase the daily budget depending on how touristic is the region.

Thailand is also a great luxury destination and we can understand why it’s the go-to destination for so many honeymooners. The cheapest place we visited in Thailand was Krabi and the most expensive were both Khao Sok and Koh Lipe.

For those on a very tight budget, you might want to explore some of the volunteering opportunities available on Worldpackers. Volunteering through this platform is one of the best ways to travel almost for free, as accommodation and food are usually provided!

The official language of Thailand is Thai. English is commonly used in tourism, although it might sometimes be a little hard to understand their accent.

Some key Thai words that are super helpful to know before you go are:

  • Sawasdee: Hello
  • Khob Khun Krub/Ka: Thank you (Krub for males, Ka for females)
  • Chai: Yes
  • Mai Chai: No

Many countries are part of Thailand’s visa exemption program, allowing their citizens to enter Thailand for tourism without a visa for stays of up to 30 days when entering by air and up to 15 days when entering overland from neighboring countries. Your nationality also determines the total amount of days you are allowed to stay in the country.

Since it varies from country to country, we recommend checking Passport Index website, where you can select your passport and see all the countries you can travel to, with or without a visa.

Yes! Thailand is considered safe for travelers, with a thriving tourism industry welcoming millions of visitors each year.

In any case, we always recommend getting travel insurance for your trip. Better safe than sorry! We use Heymondo and highly recommend it.

November to April: Known as the Cool Season, it is often considered the best time to visit. The weather is cooler and drier. It’s also the peak tourist season. In April, don’t miss out on Songkran!

March to June: Also known as the Hot Season, temperatures during this season can soar – especially in April and May. If you don’t mind the heat, this can still be a good time to visit!

July to October: This is the Monsoon season, characterised by heavy, short bursts of rain, usually in the afternoons or evenings.

Here are some of the must-try dishes you can’t miss when in Thailand:

  • Pad Thai: Probably the most popular, Pad Thai is a stir-fried noodle dish typically made with shrimp or chicken.
  • Tom Yum: A hot and sour Thai soup, known for its distinct and bold flavors.
  • Tom Kha Gai: Another soup, this one is creamy and rich coconut chicken soup and it’s our favorite Thai dish!
  • Som Tam (Green Papaya Salad): A refreshing and spicy salad made from shredded unripe papaya, this dish is a perfect blend of sweet, sour, and spicy.
  • Massaman Curry: This is a relatively mild curry that reflects a fusion of Thai and Indian flavors. It typically includes chicken, potatoes, coconut milk and peanuts.
  • Mango Sticky Rice: For dessert, this sweet and simple dish is a must-try. It’s made with glutinous rice, fresh mango slices, and sweet coconut milk.

  • Be respectful of local customs and traditions.
  • Dress modestly when visiting temples: read this guide on Temple Etiquette.
  • Use reputable transportation services like Grab or 12Go Asia: read this post for the best apps to download in Southeast Asia.
  • Always have cash with you, most of the transactions are still cash only. We recommend using a travel debit card such as Wise to withdrawal local money straight from ATMs with the lowest fees.
